We Need a Bridge

Video Campaign

Challenge

In September 2020, months into the COVID pandemic and facing an upcoming national election, I knew that it would be an especially difficult year for fundraising for Dance Wire and the greater dance community. Much of the public remained unaware of the scale and vitality of the local dance community and the disruption it was facing.

Idea

Create a moment of collective visibility by inviting dancers across the city to gather and dance - unrehearsed and in full costume. Within two weeks, the project mobilized volunteers, filmmakers, photographers, and 80 dancers to transform an iconic Portland bridge into a moving portrait of the dance community.

Outcome

The film emphasized the scale, diversity, and humanity of the dance ecosystem while reinforcing the role of Dance Wire as a unifying force. It served as both a call for support and a reminder that movement, creativity, and physical community are essential to a vibrant cultural life.

Focus

  • Mobilizing a creative community during crisis

  • Increasing public visibility of the dance ecosystem

  • Advocacy for the cultural and economic value of dance
